Think What Type of BMXer You Are

If it’s your first time buying BMX wheels (or a BMX bike), it’ really important for you to know what style of BMX riding you’ll most likely do. Do you like the adrenaline rush from racing? Or, do you need a bmx rims set that can withstand complicated stunts and jumps?

Wheels for this sport are made for two major categories: freestyle and racing. These two disciplines can still be broken down into many sub-categories. For instance, under Freestyle BMX, you have Dirt (or Trail), Flatland, Park, and Street.

Freestyle BMX wheels are optimized for stunts and jumps. That’s why they’re often made from materials that are tough and long-lasting. They could also be made lighter, but that could alter your stunts instantly.

In BMX Racing, wheels are usually light for improved speed and easier acceleration. They’re also stiff (but not too stiff) and steady for several reasons: to make your steering more accurate, to prevent them from bending under load, and to hold your speed for longer when cycling along flats.

Wheel Diameter

The main purpose of spokes is to evenly spread out the weight of the rider and the bike to prevent the wheels from becoming damaged over time. But, high-quality rims can often compensate for poor-quality or inadequate number of spokes.

The spokes of BMX wheels are often made out of steel or aluminum. Straight-gauge spokes have the same thickness or thinness along their length, unless they’re “butted.” Spokes that are butted are thin in the center and thick at the ends, making them strong and light at the same time.

Spoke Lacing Patterns

Three-Cross (3x or 3-Cross)

Two-Cross (2x or 2-Cross)

One-Cross (1x or 1-Cross)

Radial (0-Cross)

With a radial or 0-cross pattern, there are no spokes that cross each other. The spokes are connected directly from the hub to the rim. If you’re looking for a lighter, slightly stiffer, and more aerodynamic wheel, this would be a good option.


The hub is located at the center of a wheel. It houses the bearings, which reduce friction and allow the wheel to spin freely. There are three kinds of hubs: freewheel, freecoaster, and cassette.


A freewheel hub is screwed into the rear hub, and then held in place by a lockring. Unlike a fixed gear, this allows you to stop pedaling abruptly and the bike will still continue to move forward.

Note: In Freestyle BMX, this type of hub is no longer being used.

Pinned Versus Welded Joints

A welded BMX wheel is quite self-explanatory. With a pinned BMX wheel, it simply refers to a method of connecting the ends of a wheel by inserting a small piece of metal.

So, which of the two is better?

There’s still an ongoing debate about this, but most agree that welded wheels are slightly stronger than pinned wheels. Welding also makes the braking surface of a wheel much smoother, at least when it’s still new.

With pinning, some riders feel that it doesn’t perfectly align the ends of a wheel. In fact, it produces a distinct ticking sound as the seam in the braking surface comes in contact with the brake pads. Some riders solve this issue by sanding the joint to create a smooth surface.


Aluminum alloy is one of the go-to materials for some department store rims for bmx bikes. One of the biggest advantages of aluminum wheels is they weigh less, which translates to quicker acceleration and faster stopping time. Aluminum wheels can also be strong, especially if they’re constructed with double walls.
